Naturopathic doctors have been working with gut health for over 100 years. We talked about gut bugs and probiotics in the '80's and '90's, long before these were household terms. We believe the next revelation in human health is recognizing that the organisms within us and our intestines, known collectively as "the microbiome", is not separate from us, nor even something we 'have'! As we like to say, "Bacteria R us!"

The naturopathic profession evolved from late 19th C. and early 20th C. doctors who recognized that all disease begins with gastrointestinal disturbances, resulting in 'toxemia' or inflammation and toxicity from poor digestion. The gut is an involuted personal landscape. We need to see the link with the soil, agricultural practices, and reinstate the respect for the minuscule life found in both systems. Antibiotics are to our health what pesticides are to our crops. Both are antithetical to biology and are the beginning of the destruction that deteriorates and destroys our normal health.
